About Asika

Asika is a sleepy town situated in the plains of the coastal Odisha, surrounded by lush green farmlands and sitting between two flowing rivers. From the times of ancient Kalinga empire in 261 BC to the colonial rule of the French Commander Bussy and the eventual takeover by the British, the district of Ganjam in which the small town of Asika resides has seen a turbulent events throughout its rich and diverse history.

Geography of Asika

The town of Asika sits in the centre of the Asika block in the Ganjam district of Odisha. The district itself lies on the east coast of the state, lying along the turquoise waters of the Bay of Bengal. The satellite location of Asika is 19.6°N 84.65°E and it sits at the elevation of a mere 30m (98ft) as it is very close to the coast of Odisha. The neighbouring blocks of Asika include Kavisuryabagar, Polasara, Buguda on the east, Bellagunta on the north, the block of Dharakote on the west and Saragada on the south. The Asika town sits north at a distance of 40km from Brahmapur (also known as Berhampur), one of the oldest cities of Odisha which is also known as a Silk City, and 35km from Bhanjanagar. The location of Asika is unique as sits right at the confluence two rivers; Ruhikulya and Badanadi. The National Highway 59 (NH – 59), connecting Gopalpur and Ahmedabad passes right through the town. Asika lies about 168km south of Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of the state of Odisha. The soil around the town is a mixture between alluvial and late rite soil that are found in the coastal and the western sides of the district respectively. The land around Asika, as characterised by the rest of the district, is rich in minerals such as lime stone (kankar), manganese, monazite and black granite.

Climate of Asika is like the rest of the coastal areas in the region; warm, humid with moderate cold and heat. The annual climate can be divided in three seasons namely; summer, monsoon, winter with the period from October to November as a period of post monsoon transition.

Administration of Asika

Asika is a Nagar Panchayat, Notified Area Council, or City Council that is a form of local-self government and is comparable to a municipality. The Nagar Panchayat has a governing committee consisting of a chairman / mayor and elected ward members. They are responsible for the essential services provided to the citizens, sanitation, schools, water supply, maintenance of the sewage system, and records of births and deaths. The Nagar Panchayat is authorised to impose and collect taxes from the inhabitants of the town. The Collector of the Ganjam district is the administrative head of the district and maintains the law and order, administers in the times of calamities and is an appointed functionary of the state government.

Population of Asika

As per the 2011 Population Census of India, the population figures in the administrative borders of the Asika Notified Area Committee stands at 21,428 of which 10,961 are males while 10,467 are females. The population of children (age 0-6) stands at 2366 which is 11.04% of total population. In the Asika Notified Area Committee, the Female Sex Ratio is quite high at 955, which is only a little bit lower than the impressive state average of 979. However, as is the trend seen throughout India, the Child Sex Ratio is lower than the overall ratio at 930, which is lower than the Odisha state average of 941. The population of the Scheduled Castes (SC) is 3794, which is about 17.71% of the entire population of the Asika Municipal Council. The population belonging to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) stands at 176 which is o.82% of the total population. As per the 2011 Population Census of India, the majority of the population is Hindu at 98.54%. The population belonging to the other religious groups is as follows: Muslim 1.25%, Christian 0.14%, Sikh 0.01%, Buddhist 0.01%, Not Stated 0.05%.

Literacy and Language in Asika

In keeping with the high Female Sex Ratio figures of the city, the literacy rate is also quite high in the Asika Notified Area Committee at 85.76 %. It is higher than state average of 72.87%. Of the total lierarcy figures, male literacy is around 92.07%. whereas the female literacy rate is lower by a considerable margin at 79.17%.

Economy of Asika

Asika is blessed with natural wealth and resources and is rich with abundant deposits of abrasive and grinding materials and minerals. Because of the easy availability of the rocks used in the commercial sphere, there are a number of stone crushing and stone polishing units in the surrounding region. The main products coming from the forests and used in the trade include timber, bamboo, tamarind, mahua, resin, kendu leaves, siali leaves, sal leaves, neem and karanja seeds. Along with the minerals and forest produce, the region also has a considerable chunk of its habitants practicing animal husbandry and rearing. Because of the availability of water, land and rich ecological diversity, the region is coming up as a fast growing economic unit. Along with the growing industry, a majority of the population is still dependent on agriculture and cultivation. As per the data released by the Population Census of India of 2011, out of each100 workers in the district 63 are engaged in agricultural sector. Since Asika is surrounded by the rich and lush farmlands, this trend continues here as well. The region is famous for its quality production of grains, especially the rice.

Culture of Asika

Asika is part of the cultural belt in the Ganjam district that is famous for the dance form accompanied by Jodi Sankh Dhwani (twin conch blowing). The artists from the region for the conch blowing. Other dance forms from the region include Ranapa and Chadeya. As Odisha houses a number of tribal communities from the ancient time, the region is also very famous for various kinds of handicrafts that exhibit the knowledge and skill of our ancestors. The handicrafts include stone carvings, wall and stone paintings, wooden instruments and toys, and Patta paintings. Bamboo basket making, grass art, beta craft (stick), paper images and basket making are also some of the skills of the several communities living in the region.

Tourism in Asika

Since Asika is situated right at the confluence of the two rivers Rushikulya and Badanadi, it is blessed with natural beauty and elegance. However, since it is a fairly small town, there are not many sites of tourist interest in Asika. In case you find yourself travelling to this small town, you could visit the Jagannath Temple and Nilakantheshwar Temple apart from the confluence. The district of Ganjam, being a coastal district has a number of interesting sites for tourism which are close to the town of Asika.

Transport in Asika

The Notified Area Committee of Asika sits right on the National Highway 59 (NH59) and the National Highway 157 (NH157). It can be reached by road from the nearest big city of Brahmapur which lies to the south of Asika at a distance of about 40km via the NH59 or the SH32. From Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar, Asika can be reached via the National Highway 5 (NH5) and the SH30. Asika has a bus stand and is connected with all the major cities in the region.

By Train : Asika is yet to be connected by the vast network of the India Railways. The nearest and the most ideal railway station to Asika is the Brahmapur Railway Station (BAM). It is at a distance of about 38km from Asika. The Bhrahmapur Station is extremely well connected with the railways as the number train frequency is about 268. Various trains such as Konark Express, Tata Visakhapatnam Special, ANGA Express, YPR BBS Special, Guwahati Express, Kanyakumari Express, Bhubaneshwar Express, Coromandel Express run through here.

By Air : The nearest airport to go the city of Asika is the Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneshwar. It is about 166km away from the city of Asika. The airport consists of two terminals; one for domestic and the other for international flights. But all the international traffic currently is routed via Delhi.
